Zylog launches ‘Wi5’ services

Zylog Systems India, a software solutions and services provider, has launched ‘Wi5’ wireless broadband services in Chennai. The WiFi service will enable customers access high-speed wireless broadband connectivity through their laptops, desktops or mobile devices by subscribing to Wi5’s service on the move


The company, which obtained a category A internet service provider license – license to operate in all of India’s DoT circles – late in 2008, will then be officially entering the ISP business in the country. Its parent already has its offshore software development units in Chennai.

Unlike traditional WiFi, which operates out of ‘hotspots’ – spots where wireless transmission equipments are fitted to provide wired connectivity to a small area around it – Zylog’s network uses a mesh network architecture, which makes the wireless network a continuous one. Popularly called a hotzone, this works much like a mobile telephony network. Zylog’s business model would be similar. The company plans to retail network subscription to individual users on a prepaid rental basis.

The company has presently set up 140 nodes in the city and aims to complete setting up 32000 nodes in five cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, apart from Chennai - by the end of the year.

IIFA Awards: Rahman Best Music Director

 Internationally acclaimed and double Oscar winning composer A R Rahman was on Saturday named the Best Music Director at the IDEA International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards for his soulful compositions in the historical romanceJodhaa Akbar.

Rahman couldn't attend the event and director Ashutosh Gowariker received the award on his behalf.

The Best Male Playback Singer Award went to Javed Ali for crooning Jashn-e-bahaara in Johdaa Akbar, while Shreya Ghoshal was named the Best Female Playback Singer for Teri ore in hit romantic comedySingh is Kinng.

Well-known Bollywood writer Javed Akhtar won the Best Lyricist Award for penning the song Jashn-e-bahaara for Jodhaa Akbar.

Aishwarya Rai, the daughter-in-law of IIFA brand ambassador Amitbabh Bachchan, was honoured with a special award for an Outstanding Achievement in International Cinema.

Director-turned actor Farhan Akhtar got the Best Male Debutant of the Year Award for Rock On!, while Asin Thottumkal got Best Female Debut award for action thriller Ghajini.

Jodhaa Akbar bagged the maximum technical awards at IIFA.

While ace designer Neeta Lulla walked away with the Best Costume Design Award for Jodhaa Akbar, Best Editing trophy went to Ballu Saluja and Best Art Direction to Nitin Chandrakant Desai for the Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai starrer historical romance.

Resul Pokkutty, who made history by winning an Oscar for his work in Slumdog Millionaire, bagged the Best Sound Recording trophy for Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini with Amrit.

The Best Cinematography Award went to Jason West for Rock On! and the Best Choreography Award went to Farah Khan for the song Desi girl featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham in Dostana.

Claim your Facebook vanity URL, the race is on!

Race to grab your own URL's on the social networking group, Facebook, is on. Claim it early before it is all gone.

It all started on Saturday after midnight, when Facebook debuted usernames for companies, individuals and groups, in order to finally enable everyone to grab an easy-to-remember, easy-to-share URL for profile or page.

If you are late, you still can do it, all you got to do is to hit facebook.com/usernames in your browser. You'll be prompted to login and, upon doing so, if qualified; you'll be given some initial options for Facebook usernames.

If the initial selections aren't what you want, just click on "More" to reveal a field where you can enter your own username and check its availability. If it is available, that's it, just accept it to save your changes.

Within seven minutes of the service being available last night, 345,000 users grabbed one each. Within 15 minutes, over a half million had, Facebook usernames, spokesperson Larry Yu said.

With Facebook offering vanity URLs for the first time, social media expert Susan Jacobson of Temple University's journalism department advises organisations as well as celebrities and politicians to claim their URLs early to avoid having to battle later with a cybersquatter.

"Generally speaking the best defense against cybersquatting or potential malicious use of a famous name is to register accounts in your company's name on new social media sites as soon as they emerge," she explained.

Jacobson likens it to the early days of the internet when regular citizens would rush to buy domain names (i.e. www.madonna.com) and then sell them to celebrities for millions of dollars.

Famous name Facebook users are going to be interested in the vanity URLs because it will make it easier for non-Facebook users to find them, noted Jacobson.

Those Facebook users who restrict access to their information may find it more convenient for their friends to connect to them with the vanity URLs, but their friends will still have to log in to see their restricted information, she said.

Australia Knocked Out of T20

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting felt too many mistakes cost them the match and resulted in an early exit from the ICC World Twenty20 after they lost by six wickets to Sri Lanka here on Monday night.

Australia, who needed a win to keep their Super Eights hopes alive following their defeat to the West Indies in the first match, struggled to get going against Sri Lanka and managed just 159 in the 20 overs.

Google bets on India growth, to hire Indians

World's leading search engine Google sees India becoming one of the 10 most "impactful markets" in the next three to five years and is planning to hire locally to drive its brand advertising stream of business.

"Our focus in India is growth. India is going to be one of the 10 most impactful market for Google in three to five years...Minimal impact on India in terms of job cuts announced globally," Google India MD Shailesh Rao saidI.

The US-based company did not reveal its India revenue or headcount. It has two R&D centres here. Outside the US, India has one of the highest headcounts, Rao said.

"At the moment India does not drive global revenue," Rao said.

The search engine, which has a monopoly position in India, is also looking at hiring here to strengthen its brand advertising revenue stream which is a new growthdriver.

"Hiring is to continue in India. We need a team for brand advertising. India is one of the largest employers outside the US and it is a strategic location with good technical skills and manpower and is among the highest growth markets for Google," he said.

He, however, added that in India the company is hiring at a reduced level and is need based.

Sensex drops 438 points, third-biggest fall of the year

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Monday suffered the third-biggest fall of the year and ended below the 15,000 level by losing nearly 438 points on weak Asian and European trends, as investors booked profits on an 88 percent rally since early March.

The Sensex, after completing 13 successive weeks of gains, suffered a loss of 437.63 points to 14,665.92 as metal, banking and realty stocks suffered hefty losses. The fall was the third-highest after those of January 7 and March 30.

In a similar fashion, the 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty dropped by 157.00 points to 4,429.90, breaking a psychological 4,600 level.

Only information technology stocks were in positive territory following a firming dollar, raising hopes of better revenue. Over 50 percent of the country's software export revenue comes from the US markets.

Marketmen said the steep rise of 88 percent in the market was overdone and attracted profit-selling by funds and retail investors.

They said the selling was more confined to sectors which had recorded handsome gains in recent times.

The major puller to the market were heavy-weight stocks like Sterlite Industries, Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, Reliance Communications, Reliance Infra, Jaiprakash Associates, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India.

Colleges become 'deemed univs' even before 1st batch passes out

The investigation into capitation fees demanded by private medical colleges in violation of a Supreme Court order has brought into focus the rampant proliferation of deemed universities which enjoy complete freedom on admission rules and fee structures with little oversight.

The last five years have seen deemed university status conferred on 55 medical colleges nationwide, raising doubts among experts on the calibre of some of the institutions that have profited from the status. In comparison, only 29 colleges were granted this privilege in the first 35 years after the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act came into effect in 1956, and another 40 in the period between 1991 and 2004.

Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, one of the two Chennai-based institutions found charging illegal donations.began offering the MBBS course in 2002, the same year that it received `deemed university' status. Using the autonomy, the college designed its own courses, syllabus and teaching methodologies. Five years later, it awarded degrees to doctors under its own name.

Terror alert across south India

After the Intelligence Bureau warning on Thursday of possible terror attacks on "soft spots" across south India, all states have been put on a high security alert.

A high alert was sounded across Andhra Pradesh after the Intelligence Bureau warned the state authorities about the threat.

Hyderabad police commissioner B Prasada Rao said that that there were intelligence reports of three terrorists planning to carry out attacks in south India. "Since Hyderabad is the target of terrorists, we are taking all security measures," he said.

Hyderabad saw two terror attacks in 2007 - a blast in the Mecca Masjid in May, and twin blasts in August - that killed over 50 people.

Security is up at information technology companies, bus and railway stations, shopping malls, theatres and defence establishments here, in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam and at the famous Lord Venkateswara temple in Tirupati.

India pays millions more for Russian warship

India has given an additional $102 million to Russia for the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov ahead of fresh negotiations before July end between the two countries on the final purchase price of the warship, a senior official said on Thursday. With the latest installment of payment, India has paid nearly $602 million to Moscow so far for the refurbishment of the Gorshkov, an aircraft carrier which has not been seaworthy after 1988
