Australia skipper Ricky Ponting felt too many mistakes cost them the match and resulted in an early exit from the ICC World Twenty20 after they lost by six wickets to Sri Lanka here on Monday night.

Australia, who needed a win to keep their Super Eights hopes alive following their defeat to the West Indies in the first match, struggled to get going against Sri Lanka and managed just 159 in the 20 overs.

Google bets on India growth, to hire Indians

World's leading search engine Google sees India becoming one of the 10 most "impactful markets" in the next three to five years and is planning to hire locally to drive its brand advertising stream of business.

"Our focus in India is growth. India is going to be one of the 10 most impactful market for Google in three to five years...Minimal impact on India in terms of job cuts announced globally," Google India MD Shailesh Rao saidI.

The US-based company did not reveal its India revenue or headcount. It has two R&D centres here. Outside the US, India has one of the highest headcounts, Rao said.

"At the moment India does not drive global revenue," Rao said.

The search engine, which has a monopoly position in India, is also looking at hiring here to strengthen its brand advertising revenue stream which is a new growthdriver.

"Hiring is to continue in India. We need a team for brand advertising. India is one of the largest employers outside the US and it is a strategic location with good technical skills and manpower and is among the highest growth markets for Google," he said.

He, however, added that in India the company is hiring at a reduced level and is need based.

Sensex drops 438 points, third-biggest fall of the year

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Monday suffered the third-biggest fall of the year and ended below the 15,000 level by losing nearly 438 points on weak Asian and European trends, as investors booked profits on an 88 percent rally since early March.

The Sensex, after completing 13 successive weeks of gains, suffered a loss of 437.63 points to 14,665.92 as metal, banking and realty stocks suffered hefty losses. The fall was the third-highest after those of January 7 and March 30.

In a similar fashion, the 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty dropped by 157.00 points to 4,429.90, breaking a psychological 4,600 level.

Only information technology stocks were in positive territory following a firming dollar, raising hopes of better revenue. Over 50 percent of the country's software export revenue comes from the US markets.

Marketmen said the steep rise of 88 percent in the market was overdone and attracted profit-selling by funds and retail investors.

They said the selling was more confined to sectors which had recorded handsome gains in recent times.

The major puller to the market were heavy-weight stocks like Sterlite Industries, Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, Reliance Communications, Reliance Infra, Jaiprakash Associates, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India.

Colleges become 'deemed univs' even before 1st batch passes out

The investigation into capitation fees demanded by private medical colleges in violation of a Supreme Court order has brought into focus the rampant proliferation of deemed universities which enjoy complete freedom on admission rules and fee structures with little oversight.

The last five years have seen deemed university status conferred on 55 medical colleges nationwide, raising doubts among experts on the calibre of some of the institutions that have profited from the status. In comparison, only 29 colleges were granted this privilege in the first 35 years after the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act came into effect in 1956, and another 40 in the period between 1991 and 2004.

Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, one of the two Chennai-based institutions found charging illegal donations.began offering the MBBS course in 2002, the same year that it received `deemed university' status. Using the autonomy, the college designed its own courses, syllabus and teaching methodologies. Five years later, it awarded degrees to doctors under its own name.

T20 World Cup Starts Today

Twenty20 could take another step towards becoming the dominant form of the game when its second World Cup begins at Lord's on Friday.




The tournament begins with England taking on rank outsiders the Netherlands, and having struggled to make an impact at the inaugural event in South Africa in 2007, the host is taking it seriously this time around.

Terror alert across south India

After the Intelligence Bureau warning on Thursday of possible terror attacks on "soft spots" across south India, all states have been put on a high security alert.

A high alert was sounded across Andhra Pradesh after the Intelligence Bureau warned the state authorities about the threat.

Hyderabad police commissioner B Prasada Rao said that that there were intelligence reports of three terrorists planning to carry out attacks in south India. "Since Hyderabad is the target of terrorists, we are taking all security measures," he said.

Hyderabad saw two terror attacks in 2007 - a blast in the Mecca Masjid in May, and twin blasts in August - that killed over 50 people.

Security is up at information technology companies, bus and railway stations, shopping malls, theatres and defence establishments here, in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam and at the famous Lord Venkateswara temple in Tirupati.
